The Brussels City Museum at a glance
The Brussels City Museum occupies the Maison du Roi, the King's House, on the Grand Place. The collection tells the story of the city through altarpieces, tapestries, paintings and sculptures made in Brussels. It also holds the original figure of Manneken Pis, which no longer stands at its fountain.
The name suggests a royal home, but the building stands on the site of the former bread hall and was rebuilt in a historicist style. Nothing about the name proves that a king lived here. If you plan to see the museum together with a guided walk, our page on Brussels walking tours from the Grand Place shows how the two fit into one day.

What you see inside
City history, art made in Brussels and one very small celebrity.
The rooms present the history of Brussels with retables, tapestries, paintings and sculptures made in the city. The museum calls the original Manneken Pis one of its masterpieces. Since 1966 the museum has shown the original, and a copy stands at the fountain on the street corner. If you want the story of the statue itself, the legend and the costumes, read our page on Manneken Pis.
The costume collection is not shown in full in the King's House. The exhibition of costumes is the GardeRobe MannekenPis at Rue du Chêne 19, about 2 minutes from the fountain and 5 minutes from the square. Your museum ticket gets you in. A visit there takes about 30 minutes.
